Streets For All explores the potential of the most ubiquitous public space in our cities. Going from Egypt to Japan, Sweden to Brazil and New York to Malta, it examines the social, economic, ecological, architectural and technical dimensions of streets across the world and offers tactics and strategies on how they can be recast, repurposed and redesigned towards greater resilience and resourcefulness. Authored by a variety of individuals – citizen activists, photographers, artists, urban designers, architects, landscape architects, ecologists, sociologists, engineers, professors, practitioners – this book interrogates the notion of who our streets are for, who in turn shapes them, by what means and to what ends. It argues that while we share larger aspirations regarding the future of our streets, the socio-political and cultural realities of the cities in which streets are situated play a crucial role in how we engage in the processes of transforming them. This book reveals why our urban future is being shaped as much by progressive efforts in affluent nations and those in economically less developed ones. Foreword by Jan Gehl : It is my hope and wish that this book will be read by individuals across nations and multiple professional disciplines. It provides us both inspiration and insight to elevate the livability of cities and towns across the world. - Founding partner of Gehl Architects & receipient of the 2015 Global Award for Sustainable Architecture Book Release : Book was launched at Katholic University, Leuven Belgium on 29 June 2022.

This volume assesses the contemporary condition of heritage and conservation in India from three perspectives - that of the monument and building; that of the city and its ecological context; and that of the broader policy and regulatory frameworks that enable conservation. To what degree does twentieth-century Modern architectural heritage in India actually impact daily urban life? Why are there unforeseen consequences of World Heritage Site designations on Indian towns and cities? Is there real potential for participatory conservation planning in the world’s largest democracy? Gathering an expansive group of multifaceted individuals – architects, conservationists, planners, urban designers, engineers, activists, educators, and practitioners – this book examines the successes and shortcomings of conservation practice in India today, and offers tactics and strategies to bridge extant social, political, and cultural gaps. This volume will be of interest to anyone seeking to understand the complex relationships between the contemporary city, conservation, and ecological-, cultural-, and built-heritage, whether in India or beyond. My Liveable City has co-published this book with INHAF.

While increasingly more people live in cities, peripheries are expending at the cost of nature. This book explains how sustainability can be achieved by urban redevelopment and upcycling. The large-scale processes of urban redevelopment in this book are based on a successful brownfield project in The Netherlands: the Paleiskwartier in ‘s-Hertogenbosch. Designing for Sustainability through Upcycling tells the nearly three-decade long inside story of how policies were made, decisions taken, designs created, how the projects developed in phases and how the city government partnered the private sector in a unique way. A series of essays and short interviews with key players involved, including directors, designers, developers and city-officials, provides a detailed overview of how this project was actually realised. This book offers first-hand information of 30 years of development as told by master planner Shyam Khandekar. Professor Vinayak Bharne places the process of upcycling in the context of developments from other parts of the world. • Explains how to achieve sustainability through urban redevelopment and upcycling • Of interest to policy makers, bureaucrats, designers, developers and other urban professionals • A must-read for those on the threshold of undertaking a brownfield redevelopment process in their city • With projects by renowned European architects a.o.:Herman Hertzberger, Benthem Crouwel (NL), Baumschlager Eberle (AT), Ralph Erskine (SE), BDP (GB), Charles Vandenhove (BE), Adolfo Natalini (IT) Book Release :Book was launched in India in association with Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi.

In a time when an estimated 1.2 billion people across the world lack access to secure housing, how are cities working to empower and promote the inclusion of all, irrespective of age, gender, ethnicity, disability and economic status? How is affordable housing bridging economic gaps across different social, political and cultural geographies, particularly for the 900 million individuals who live in slums? This volume explores the interface of social justice and city making through comparative discussions from Asia, Africa, Australia and Europe, as well as North, Central and South America. The thirty six essays in this collection include conversations with influential administrators and civic leaders such as Somsook Boonyabancha and Jaime Lerner. Commentaries on transformative initiatives such as ‘Child Friendly Cities’, and ‘Women for the World’. And case studies of exemplary projects by globally known architects and planners such as Alejandro Aravena and MVRDV. The multifaceted narrative of this volume is a call for expanding the narrow focus on urban equitability, towards a more integral outlook on the myriad ways through which affordable housing and inclusive cities are being generated globally. Book Release :Book was launched in India in association with Alembic City, Baroda.
