The term ‘Urban Infrastructure’ refers to structures, systems and facilities, which serve a city and its citizens. It refers to physical components such as roads, water, sewage lines and electrical lines, and also to natural and ecological infrastructure. Since a couple of decades, digital infrastructure has been added to this list. The term ‘Infrastructure’ suggests ‘connectivity’, since citizens come to cities to connect with one another be it for trade, entertainment, or simply for social reasons. Invariably, efficiency is a very important criterion for judging the adequacy of urban infrastructure and so also sustainability and user-friendliness. Once a choice has been made for a particular type of urban infrastructure, it should be rolled out quickly and efficiently. Additionally, it should be very user-friendly thus reducing the risk of a new system overtaking it technologically and wooing its clients away. Ideally, sustainability should play an important role in the choice of urban infrastructure.
