To understand and appreciate its DNA – as probably a medical professional would say of his patient – and think up a future that builds on the city’s DNA.This ability to retain a city’s uniqueness is particularly important in an age of globalisation, when a Shiroli wants to be a Kolhapur, a Kolhapur wants to be a Pune, a Pune wants to be a Mumbai and a Mumbai wants to be a London or a New York.It is important for us to remember that it is in realising their own character and pursuing futures that are in line with this character that cities have the best chance to prosper, be sustainable and have happy citizens.The diversity in cities is why we enjoy visiting places that are different from the ones we live in. This diversity of character of cities is something to retain, nurture, nourish and celebrate.
