Engineering becomes Art when the engineering solution not only simply solves the narrow functional need it set out to answer (just problem solving), but places it in the wider context of societal vision and/or aesthetics. Long ago when the Romans as master engineers set up their water-transportation systems, they designed artefacts, which not only fulfilled the need for water to be transported, but created architectural elements, which 2000 years later are seen as objects of exceptional beauty. The Pont du Gard that stands tall over the French landscape between Nimes and Uzes, besides being an engineering feat, is a piece of art.The idea of beauty as an inherent result of great engineering design is explained best by the well-known Buckminster Fuller, the famous American inventor who said, “When I am working on a problem, I never think about beauty, but when I am finished, if the solution is not beautiful, I know it is wrong.”Ultimately to make our cities more liveable we need to inspire our engineers to look at Engineering as Art. To not look at engineering problems in silos, but in the context of the well-being of the entire city.
