While social media-enabled Smart Technology has created unimaginable opportunities for individuals to interact in cyberspace, unlimited by urban or national boundaries, its impact on the physical urban domain is not known. Will the efficiency achieved lead to better quality of human interaction and better community life? Will a greater number of CCTV cameras make our neighbourhoods safer? Will greater online connectivity reduce the vehicular burden on our roads? Will the ease of Wi-Fi connectivity make cities more liveable? We must realise that the repercussions of all these individual actions for the urban society and civic life are phenomenal. At its core, this discussion raises the question: What type of urban society do we aspire to? The Appropriate Technology must then be selected to attain that goal of the urban society we all want. Technology cannot, by itself, be the driver to change society; it must serve us to achieve the urban aspirations each of us has.
